Kan Jam Rules: Scoring, Instant Win & Redemption

Kan Jam is the fast, addictive team game where you and a partner sling a flying disc at a slotted can while your teammate tries to deflect it home. Part frisbee, part teamwork, part pure luck when someone sinks the legendary slot shot for an instant win. Grab a buddy, set the cans 50 ft apart, and let's get into how it actually works.

What you need

  • Two Kan Jam cans (the slotted plastic containers)
  • One official flying disc (a standard frisbee works in a pinch)
  • Four players split into two teams of two
  • A roughly 60 ft stretch of flat yard, beach, or park
  • A tape measure to set the cans 50 ft apart
The playbook

How to play kan jam

  1. Set up the cansPlace the two cans 50 ft apart, slot facing slot. Each team claims one can. One teammate stands at each can, so the two members of a team are at opposite ends of the court.
  2. Throw the discOn your team's turn, one player throws the disc the full 50 ft toward the far can while their partner waits there as the deflector. You must throw from your own can's end and cannot step past the can line when you release.
  3. Deflect toward the canThe thrower's partner can redirect the disc with one hand (or both) to help it hit or enter the can. You cannot catch and re-throw it, just a deflection. If the disc is heading wide, that quick slap toward the can is how you score.
  4. Score the throw, then alternateTally the points for that throw. Then the other team takes their turn throwing and deflecting. Teams keep alternating turns, one throw per turn, the whole game.
  5. Race to exactly 21You must reach exactly 21 points to win. If a throw would push you over 21, that throw scores nothing and your total stays put. So near the end you sometimes aim for the smaller-point hits on purpose.
  6. Watch for the instant winIf the thrower lands the disc directly through the can's slot opening without any deflection, that is an instant win, full stop, no matter the score. It is the rarest and most satisfying shot in the game.
Keeping score

Scoring

  • Dinger / deflector hit: partner deflects the disc and it hits the can, worth 1 point
  • Deuce / direct hit: the thrower's disc hits the can with no deflection, worth 2 points
  • Bucket / slam dunk: the deflector redirects the disc into the can, worth 3 points
  • Instant Win: the thrower sends the disc cleanly through the can's side slot with no deflection, wins the game immediately regardless of score
  • You must hit exactly 21 to win; any throw that would put you over 21 scores 0 and your score does not change
Set it up right

Distance & setup

set it up rightThe two cans are set 50 ft apart for standard play. You throw from your own can and may not cross that line on release. For younger players or tight spaces, shorten the distance so the disc still reaches.
House rules

Fun variations

  • 2-player Kan Jam: play one-on-one. With no deflecting partner, you focus on direct hits and the instant-win slot shot.
  • Redemption / rebuttal rule: in some house rules, once a team would win, the other team gets one final turn to tie or also reach the target.
  • Overtime: agree before the game on a short overtime such as first team to score any points, or first to a new exact target.
  • Shorter court: drop the cans to 30 to 40 ft apart for kids or smaller yards.

Kan Jam rules FAQ

How far apart are Kan Jam cans?

Official Kan Jam cans are placed 50 ft apart. You throw from your own can toward your partner at the far can, and you cannot step past the can line when you release the disc.

What is the instant win in Kan Jam?

An instant win happens when the thrower sends the disc cleanly through the narrow slot on the side of the can with no help from a deflection. It wins the game immediately no matter what the score is.

Do you have to hit exactly 21 in Kan Jam?

Yes. You must land on exactly 21 points to win. If a throw would push your total over 21, that throw scores nothing and your score stays where it was.

How does scoring work in Kan Jam?

A deflected hit off your partner is 1 point, a direct hit by the thrower is 2 points, and a disc that goes into the can off a deflection is 3 points. Sending the disc through the side slot directly is an instant win.

Can you play Kan Jam with 2 players?

Yes. The game is built for 2v2, but you can play one-on-one. Without a deflecting partner you rely on direct hits and the instant-win slot shot.

What is the rebuttal or redemption rule in Kan Jam?

It is a common house rule, not in the official rulebook. Once a team is about to win, the other team gets one last turn to tie or also reach the target. Agree on whether you are using it before the game.
