Giant Connect Four Rules: How to Play & Set Up
Giant four in a row proves a simple idea gets even better when it is three feet tall. Two players, two colors, one tall standing grid, and a race to line up four discs before your opponent blocks you. Kids love it because it is instantly understandable, and adults get weirdly competitive once they realize there is real strategy hiding in those columns. Here is everything you need to run it, win it, and reset for the rematch.
What you need
- A giant four in a row set: the standing grid frame plus two colors of large discs (usually 21 of each)
- A flat, level surface so the frame stands straight and discs drop cleanly
- Two players or two teams
- Optional: a few minutes to assemble the frame the first time you set it up
How to play giant connect four
- Set up the gridAssemble and stand the grid upright on flat ground. The classic layout is 7 columns across and 6 rows tall. Make sure it is level and stable so discs slide down and settle without jamming. Split the discs so each player has one color.
- Choose colors and who goes firstEach player takes one color of discs. Decide who drops first however you like. Players alternate turns from there, one disc per turn.
- Take turns dropping discsOn your turn, drop one of your discs into the top of any column that is not already full. It falls and stacks on top of whatever is already in that column. Then it is your opponent's turn.
- Build toward four in a rowTry to line up four of your color in a row while blocking your opponent from doing the same. A winning line can run horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
- Win the roundThe first player to connect four of their color in an unbroken line, in any direction, wins the round immediately.
- Empty and resetPull the release lever (or slide bar) at the bottom of the frame to drop all the discs out at once, then sort by color and play again.
Scoring
- There is no point counting in giant four in a row. The first player to connect four of their color in a row wins the round outright.
- A winning line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
- Match play (optional): play best of three or best of five rounds to crown a champion and reduce the luck of who went first.
- Draw: if every space fills with no four-in-a-row, the round is a tie. Reset and play again.
Distance & setup
Fun variations
- Pop-out style: allow players to remove one of their own discs from the bottom row on their turn instead of dropping a new one, shifting the whole column down.
- Team play: split into two teams that alternate turns and confer on strategy.
- Speed round: set a short timer per turn to keep things moving.
- First-move handicap: let the weaker player go first every round to balance the built-in first-move advantage.
Giant Connect Four rules FAQ
How do you win at giant Connect Four?
You win by being the first to line up four of your color discs in an unbroken row. The line can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. As soon as you connect four, the round is over and you win.
How many discs come with giant four in a row?
Most giant sets include 42 discs total, 21 of each color, which is exactly enough to fill the standard 7-column by 6-row grid. Always split them evenly so each player has 21 to start.
How big is the grid in giant Connect Four?
The classic grid is 7 columns wide and 6 rows tall, the same layout as the tabletop version. Giant lawn versions stand around three to four feet tall, so it plays standing up instead of on a table.
How do you empty a giant Connect Four after a game?
Most giant sets have a release lever or sliding bar across the bottom of the frame. Pull or slide it and all the discs drop out at once. If your set does not have one, just tip the frame and let the discs fall out.
Is there strategy in four in a row?
Absolutely. The key is making your own four-in-a-row threats while blocking your opponent's. Watch for setups where one move gives you two ways to win at once, since your opponent can only block one. Going first carries a slight advantage.
How long does it take to set up giant Connect Four?
After the first-time assembly of the frame, setup takes only a couple of minutes: stand the grid on flat ground, level it, and split the discs by color. It is one of the fastest lawn games to get going.
